The lake and its mudflats are a vital stopover on the North American Flyway for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds offering excellent bird watching opportunities. This nature lovers paradise features raptors (including Eagles), beavers, and much more. The Hoover Nature Preserve surrounding the reservoir is a successful breeding ground for Prothonotory Warblers that has attracted conservationists from around the globe.

Boating on Hoover

A great place to view birds is from the 1,500 foot Hoover Boardwalk located at 28 Front St. in Galena. Two Osprey platforms have been installed by local volunteers to assist in reintroducing the "fish hawks" in Central Ohio. Osprey have also built natural nests in trees. It is extremely important to the Osprey's success that boaters avoid the platform areas. Scaring the birds off the nest can cause the eggs to fail or be subject to predators.

Hoover Meadows, at 3715 Sunbury Road, offers walking trails along wetlands, vernal pools, streams, grassland, and woodlands. Mud Hen Marsh, at 8742 Big Walnut Road, features trails and an observation blind overlooking meadows and a pond. Lawrence Woods features forests and ravines viewed from a walking trail across from the Twin Bridges Boat Ramp at 4856 Sunbury Rd.

Oxbow, at 8798 Oxbow Rd., Westerville, is undergoing significant improvements through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. Upon completion in Fall 2018, the area will feature roadway, pedestrian, and fishing improvements; birding/naturalist parking; a new motor boat launch pad; and, a new canoe/kayak launching dock.

For sewer, streets, and drainage concerns within the Village limits, call the Village Administrator at 740-965-2484. Lines outside of the public right of way are considered private and are the responsibility of the private property owner.

To Set Up a Sewer Account or Pay Your Bill

To set up billing, contact the Village of Galena at 740-965-2484. Once a facility is connected to the Village's system, billing occurs quarterly regardless of whether a facility is occupied or not.

You can opt into email billing. Just check the email bill box on your bill stub when you send it in for payment.

There are several payment options:

  • Drop-off payments at the Village Hall, 109 Harrison St., during office hours Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. or in our secure 24-hour drop box on the building.

Streets & Sidewalks

If you have concerns related to Village streets, please contact the Village Offices. Please check our map to ensure you actually live within the Village boundaries. Having a Galena mailing address does not mean you live in the Village. Sidewalk maintenance is the responsibility of the property owner. All sidewalks should be maintained in good, safe condition and should be passable at all times.

Snow Removal

When ice or two or more inches of snow fall within a 24-hour period, a snow emergency is in effect. Between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., all vehicles should be moved off all village streets to allow safer plowing. Vehicles not moved may be towed at the owner's expense.

During any bad winter weather, having vehicles off the streets and out of the road right-of-ways assists with our snow removal efforts.

Please do not move snow into the road right-of-way or onto sidewalks.

It is each property owner's responsibility to maintain his/her sidewalks for safe passage by all.

Ohio to Erie Trail

The Ohio to Erie Trail spans the state of Ohio from Cincinatti to Cleveland following lands formerly owned by railroads and canals. When complete, this trail will connect four of Ohio's metropolitan cities, a dozen large towns, and numerous small villages, including Galena - all done on easily accessible, paved trails, that are completely separated from highways and automobiles.
